How international students open and use a Turkish bank account: the documents needed, the tax number, and what to expect from everyday banking.
Reviewed · August 17, 2026A student in Türkiye can open a bank account whether self-funded or supported by Türkiye Scholarships (YTB). Customer-identification procedures and accepted documents vary by bank and branch.
Call the branch before going, as policies for opening accounts for foreigners, documents, and fees change. Do not send your passport, SMS codes, or login details to anyone claiming they will open the account on your behalf.
Normally, the student should have a residence permit when opening the account. Some Ziraat Bankası branches, and occasionally Albaraka Türk, may allow using a passport before the residence permit is issued. This exception is not guaranteed and varies from city to city and branch to branch.
Widely available and usually relatively easier in its procedures, but accepting the application and documents remains a decision of the bank and branch.

Choose a suitable bank and call the branch before visiting to confirm that it accepts foreign customers and to verify the required documents.
Tell the employee that you are an international student and wish to open a bank account.
You may request a Turkish-lira account (Türk Lirası Hesabı), a foreign-currency account (Döviz Hesabı), or both if the bank offers them.
Complete the account-opening form with the employee’s help, register your phone number and email, and read the contracts and fees before signing.
After approval, you will usually receive an IBAN. The card may be issued immediately or after several days depending on the bank and branch.
The bank may provide a temporary PIN to change at an ATM or let you create one on first use. Ask the employee to help activate only the official banking app.
YTB instructions confirm that a scholarship student’s account is opened in their name at VakıfBank, with a tax number, customer number, and IBAN listed on the account-information sheet.
Monitor the TBBS system and your email, and update your Turkish phone number and contact information according to the instructions you receive.
Visit the nearest branch to activate or update the account. Tell the employee that you are a Türkiye Scholarships student and present a printed copy of the account-information sheet.
YTB instructions require you to specify the VakıfBank branch where you want to collect the card, preferably the one nearest your accommodation or university.
