How to complete university registration in Türkiye: the documents commonly requested, registration steps, and what to prepare before your appointment.

Admission and registration requirements, documents, and dates differ between universities and from year to year. Always consult the official website and international student office of the university where you will apply.
The university-admission process differs fundamentally between a Türkiye Scholarships (YTB) student and a self-funded student. Final registration (Kesin Kayıt) follows issuance of the acceptance letter and generally requires submitting original documents to the university.
Admission process for Türkiye Scholarships (YTB) students

During the scholarship application, the student ranks preferred universities and programs, and the list may contain up to 12 choices.

Review of the file and preferences
After passing the interview and receiving the scholarship, the YTB committee reviews the student’s file and preferences.

University placement
YTB places the student directly at one of the selected universities, or at a university it considers suitable for the student’s qualifications, instead of the student submitting a separate admission application.

Receive the acceptance letter
The student receives a YTB letter stating the university and program of admission. University admission is therefore part of the scholarship package.
Summary for YTB students: the student does not apply independently for separate university admission. They receive the scholarship, and the provider grants university admission as part of the package.
Public-university admission routes for self-funded students

TR‑YÖS or YÖS examination
This is the most common route: the student registers for the examination and uses the result to apply for admission selection at universities that accept it.

International qualifications such as SAT or ACT
Some major universities, such as ODTÜ, Boğaziçi, and İTÜ, may prefer the SAT, particularly for some engineering and management programs. Confirm accepted examinations directly with the university.

High school diploma (Lise Diploması)
A limited number of public universities accept applications based solely on the high school diploma, and competition is intense, potentially requiring very high grades, particularly for competitive programs.

Apply to a public university as a self-funded student

Monitor application opening dates
Wait for the university to announce international student applications (YÖS Başvuru), and check dates and conditions on its official website.

Complete the university’s online form and enter your information accurately.

Attach the required eligibility document
Upload the TR‑YÖS, YÖS, or SAT result, or the high school diploma, according to what the university accepts in the current application cycle.

Monitor the results channel specified by the university, then meet the enrollment-confirmation deadline if accepted.
Admission to private foundation universities (Vakıf Üniversiteleri)

Apply with a high school diploma
The basic requirement is usually the high school diploma and transcript, and an entrance examination may sometimes be required, particularly for medicine and dentistry.

Contact the international student office
The student contacts the International Office directly through the website or email and sends copies of the passport, diploma, and transcript translated into Turkish or English as required.

Receive preliminary acceptance
After reviewing the file and confirming minimum requirements, the university may send a preliminary acceptance letter (Ön Kabul Mektubu), which may include a tuition offer or discount.

Final registration for a YTB student

Arrive in Türkiye
The student arrives using the visa and travel ticket provided by the scholarship under its procedures.

Go to the university
The student visits the student affairs office (Öğrenci İşleri) at the university where they were placed.

Submit original documents
Submit the YTB acceptance letter, passport and student visa, original high school diploma and transcript, biometric photographs, and any additional documents requested by the university.

Complete diploma equivalency
The student needs a high school diploma equivalency document (Denklik). Scholarship students generally receive help obtaining it after arrival, and the procedures may be organized for them as a group.

Complete forms and receive the card
After completing the university's forms and submitting the file, enrollment is officially confirmed and the student receives their university ID card (Öğrenci Kimliği). A YTB student does not pay tuition fees because the scholarship covers them.
Final registration for a self-funded student

Obtain the visa
Use the preliminary acceptance letter to apply for a student visa through the responsible Turkish mission. Some private universities may require a deposit or first installment before issuing the official letter used for the visa.

Arrive before the deadline
Arrive in Türkiye before the end of the final registration period (Kesin Kayıt Tarihleri) announced by the university.

Obtain diploma equivalency
Take the original high school diploma and transcript, their translations, and authentications to the responsible equivalency center to obtain a Denklik Belgesi. Check with the university: some institutions require it when confirming enrollment, while others allow time to submit it later.

Pay tuition fees
Pay the first tuition installment or the full annual fees according to the university’s system, and keep the payment receipt (Dekont).

Submit the registration file
Visit Öğrenci İşleri within the specified period and submit the equivalency certificate when requested, the fee receipt, acceptance letter, original diploma and transcript, passport and visa, personal photographs, and any other documents requested by the university.

Receive the student card
After the file is reviewed and complete, your enrollment is officially confirmed and you receive the university student card.
Important notes
- If you are self-funded and want to attend a public university, first check whether it accepts the high school diploma directly before beginning a more complicated examination route.
- Some universities may not request the equivalency certificate at the first enrollment-confirmation step but may request it later; you will ultimately need to submit it under the university’s rules.
- Some universities allow equivalency to be submitted at a later stage, possibly as late as graduation, while others treat it as an essential registration requirement.
- Do not rely on fixed examination names or admission rates; use the university’s official international student page for the current application cycle.
